Geography to Guntur, Andhra Pradesh
Artisans -500
Description - Mangalagiri Handmade Gold Jewellery Cluster situated in Mangalagiri Block of Guntur District in Andhra Pradesh. Genesis of the cluster is more than 100 years old, when jewellers from Vijayawada and Guntur migrated to the place and started making jewelry, mainly catering to temple requirements. Due to increase in flow of tourists and as the town is strategically located between Vijayawada and Guntur, the population also increased, thereby increasing the demand for jewelry items. Today Mangalagiri jewelry is called as Mini Mumbai due to diversity in type of ornaments and their craftsmanship. Chains, Rings, Bracelets, Necklaces, Matis, Ear Rings, lockets, Belts, nose pins are the major products of the cluster. While 35% of the production is making of rings & ear rings, 25% is for chains, 15% is for bracelets remaining 15% for other products. The objective of this cluster is to improve the safety of artisans and security of jewellery by establishing a hall mark center in cluster region, so as to avoid thefts. Also to make the artisans as direct producers than remaining as job workers which ultimately may increase their income level and living standards.
